As the nycapitalsports.net tribute
to the champions comes to a close we
finish the same way we ended,
honoring Burnt Hills Junior Otis
Ubriaco. We saw Otis win the only
State Championship in the fall and
in the spring he not only captured
the State title in the 3200 meters
but also took home the Federation
crown in an exciting comeback
victory.
Ubriaco was not the only champion on
the boys side of the track. Two
individuals captured field
championships as well.
Fonda's Shane Smith took home gold
in the Discus while Albany Academy's
Jelanie Currie had the farthest
triple jump in the State capturing
his first title.
In a team effort the trackless

captured the schools first track &
field State gold. |

FOUR MORE CHAMPIONS
|
 |
|
Klarissa Ricks of Holy Names |
|
|
Much like during the winter
track season, the girls in
Section II ruled the outdoor
track as well. The track &
Field student athletes of our
area have made their claim as
the most succesful of all the
Section II competitors and in
the spring we saw some amazing
perfromances.
Klarissa Ricks (left) of Holy
Names had the most impressive
and succesful performances
taking home three golds in three
seperate events. Ricks
completed the trifecta by
winning the Long Jump, 100 meter
dash and anchoring the 400 meter
relay team.
Kyle Plante of Colonie chose the
400 meter hurdles as her #1
event at the State Champinships
and it proved to be a good
choice as once again the
sophomore dominated the
competition.
The final gold medal winner on
the girls side was Saratoga's
Madalyne Smith. Not only
did the senior win the state
championship in the 100 hurdles
but she also captured the
federation title. |

FORT ANN: THE CARDINAL RULE |
Spring is the season when we
stare at diamonds.

came to the mat Section II was
highly represented at an
electric State Championship meet
at the Times Union Center.

(above) and Nick Gwiadzowski of
Duanesburgh each took home their

|
SKIING... YES SKIING |
|
|
In Section II winter sports are
viewed as indoor contests.
Baketball, wrestling, indoor
track, bowling and swimming all
take place inside.
There are winter sports that
take place outside and The
Capital Region flaunts one of
the best and brightest student
athletes in the sport.
In the year of the Winter
Olympics, nordic skiing received
alot more press than what would
normally be seen. High
School Nordic Skiing in this
area received a little extra as
well with Queensbury's Carly
Wynn taking home a State
Championship.
The strqaight A student captured
the title this past February and
looks to furhter her
championships in years to come.
The junior will look to repeat
next year and after that will
look to move on and someday,
eventually be an Olympic star
herself.
Her training, her classwork, and
support team have made Carly
Wynn an individual Champion. |
|
AP TAKES THE FEDERATION |
Averill Park's started the
season as the #1 ranked Class A
girls basketball team in New
York State. When the
season ended they were still
atop the list. The
Warriors defeated Lakeland 53-46
in the State title game and then
went on to defeat Medgar Evers
and St. Anthony's to earn the
Federation Championship as well.
|
|
A PURPLE AND GOLD WINTER |
The fall produced one individual
and one team State Champion for
Section II. The winter
provided much more success for
the Capital Rgion. The CBA
boys basketball team was one of
two teams to come away with
State Titles. The Brothers
entered the State tournament
after defeating Shenendehowa in
the Section II Class AA title
game. They then defeated
Cicero North Syracuse and
defending Champin Newburgh to
reach the finals where they
dominated Nationally ranked Half
